Press On presents an all day training for media makers, journalists, and activists

Facilitated by Lewis Raven Wallace and Mia Henry of Press On, with the support of the Center for Cooperative Media, which is hosting the virtual 2020 Collaborative Journalism Summit May 14-15.
The training is offered on a sliding scale from $25-$125 per person. Registration is limited, and once you are accepted, scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Want to work together to challenge white supremacy and sexism in journalism? A growing number of journalists are dissatisfied with the racism, patriarchy, gatekeeping, and exploitation we encounter in the journalism industry today. So let’s get organized around changing it!
Transforming Journalism Beyond Diversity pushes people in the field of journalism to think beyond diversity and delve into the systems of power and oppression that historically and currently shape newsrooms, and the communities they cover and serve.
Transforming Journalism examines the structures that keep journalism from realizing its potential to be truly equitable and representative. This training explores how the journalism industry today reinforces and benefits from oppressive practices towards both journalists and the communities we cover and serve. It is based in the understanding that interpersonal interactions and issues of representation are only one aspect of how oppression plays out in the journalism industry. The facilitators provide a systemic analysis of the problems in order to foster creative solutions grounded in history.
Participants will work together to develop liberatory strategies for engaging with editors, editorial policies, publications, and journalism schools towards transforming how journalism works today. This interactive training is also intersectional, focusing on racial and gender justice but not excluding discussions of disability justice, LGBTQ issues, and economic oppression in the news industry.
Transforming Journalism Beyond Diversity is open to journalists, editors, newsroom leaders, activists, and members of the public interested in a journalism that better serves our communities.
